There's some good food for thought here - I usually approach this chapter of Genesis thinking how difficult it must have been for Abraham to commit to obeying God's command and the struggle that must have been for him as a parent (probably I'm being influenced by R.C. Sproul's discussion of the text, which leans in part of Soren Kierkegaard's Fear and Trembling").
I'll have to give some consideration to whether me projecting my own thoughts on how I'd react as a parent in that situation has led to me discounting the strength of Abraham's faith.
